The City
The City of Calistoga is located at the northern end of the Napa Valley, and has the charm of a small town and the sophistication of a world-class tourist destination. The City is famous for its natural hot springs, and has drawn residents and visitors to the Napa Valley for nearly 160 years. The City of Calistoga is a full-service city providing a full range of services including police and fire protection; planning activities; code enforcement and building inspections; park facilities, aquatics, and recreation programs; construction and maintenance of streets, public buildings, and other infrastructure facilities; water production and distribution; and wastewater collection, treatment, and recycling.
The Department
The Police Department is staffed by a Chief, Lieutenant, two Sergeants, nine Police Officers, five employees in dispatch (supplemented with part-time dispatchers) one Community Services Officer, and two part-time Police Technicians. The Department provides many of the services found in larger agencies, accomplished by training staff in a variety of collateral duties.
The Calistoga Police Department provides 24x7 traditional police services in addition to a high level of community-oriented policing. Calistoga’s low crime rate permits the Police Department to maintain a high customer focus with residents and businesses in the prevention of criminal activity and response to routine and emergency calls for service. Calistoga’s violent crime rate is 52% below the State average and 46% below the National average. Calistoga’s property crime rate is 19% below the State average and 11% below the National average.

The Position of Police Officer
This position performs a wide variety of peace officer duties involving the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and ordinances, criminal investigation, crime prevention and suppression.
Police Officers prepare cases and provide courtroom testimony, provide information and assistance to the public and perform special assignments in areas such as patrol, traffic, investigations, and auxiliary duties such as school resource officer, firearms instructor, defensive tactics instructor, taser instructor, etc…
In patrol, a Police Officer is assigned an area in a car, on bicycle, or on foot to observe and report suspicious activities or hazardous conditions for the prevention and detection of crime, arrests law violators in accordance with applicable statutory and case laws. This position also answers routine and emergency calls for protection of life and property and the enforcement of City, Council, State and Federal laws, codes and ordinances.

Minimum Qualifications
The City’s recruitment is for an academy graduate or police lateral. Individuals presently attending a POST-certified police academy are encouraged to apply. A qualified applicant will need:
- A valid California’s driver’s license
- California State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Certificate
Pay and Benefits
$85,910 to $104,419 per year
- Overtime pay
- 13 holidays; employees working on a holiday receive overtime pay
- 2.5% for possession of a POST Intermediate Certificate, an Associate’s degree or 60 college credits
- 2.5% for possession of a POST Advanced Certificate, a Bachelor’s degree or 120 college credits
- January 2024 pay increase of 3% - 5%, depending on cost of living changes
- January 2025 pay increase of 3% - 5%, depending on cost of living changes
Benefits include:
- The City is part of the CalPERS retirement plan. Classic employee formula is 2% at 55. PEPRA employees hired after January 1, 2013, or Classic employee with 6-month break in service are eligible for 2% at 57.
