Reusable Foodware and Waste Reduction
The City of Calistoga is pleased to announce the City Council’s approval, on March 21, 2023, of new regulations governing food packaging and single-use foodware. This ordinance reflects and expands upon the 2021 CA Assembly Bill 1276 governing single-use foodware accessories.
The purpose of the new ordinance is to reduce the significant impact of plastic and other food packaging pollution on climate change, wildlife, landfill, litter, the economy and health of our community. We are proud to be joining dozens of California cities and counties that have adopted similar legislation.
The new rules take effect on March 20, 2024, allowing a full year for businesses to use up non-compliant foodware inventory as we shift to more environmentally friendly products. You are, of course, encouraged to voluntarily begin compliance before the mandated effective date.
Regardless of claims by suppliers, it is important to note that Calistoga’s definitions of “recyclable” and “compostable” are framed to comply specifically with Upper Valley Disposal standards. CLICK HERE for a supplier list.
