The City
The City of Calistoga is located at the northern end of the Napa Valley, and has the charm of a small town and the sophistication of a world-class tourist destination. The City is famous for its natural hot springs, and has drawn residents and visitors to the Napa Valley for nearly 160 years. Calistoga offers outstanding regional cuisine and is the perfect place to relax and enjoy fine wines. The City is approximately 2.6 square miles with an estimated population of 5,348.
The City of Calistoga is a full-service city providing a full range of services including police and fire protection; planning activities; code enforcement and building inspections; park facilities, aquatics, and recreation programs; construction and maintenance of streets, public buildings, and other infrastructure facilities; water production and distribution; and wastewater collection, treatment, and recycling.
The Department
The Department provides coverage for approximately 56 square miles and is staffed by a Fire Chief and nine professional staff supplemented by part-time fire fighters. The professional staff have three teams, each of a Fire Captain, Fire Engineer and Firefighter working a rotational schedule of two days work followed by four days off.
During 2022, the Department responded to 1,145 calls, of which approximately 64% were medical related, 5% fires, 5% hazardous conditions, and the remaining were for false alarms, special incidents and public assists.
This recruitment is to hire for existing part-time Firefighter vacancies, and to establish an eligible list.
The Position of Firefighter
Firefighters exercise a high level of discretion and independent judgment in performing the full range of fire suppression, basic medical emergency, hazardous materials, and other emergency response activities and functions. Job duties include, but not limited, to the following:
- Operates and maintains all fire apparatus and related fire services and medical equipment to ensure operational readiness and safety of fire personnel.
- Responds to fire alarms, emergency medical calls at the basic life support level, emergency rescues, hazardous material incidents, public service calls, or other incidents that may threaten life or property.
- Searches and rescues victims from buildings, motor vehicles, water hazards, and other locations.
- Applies medical treatment and life support techniques within the scope of an Emergency Medical Technician; provides assistance to qualified paramedics; assists in the emergency transportation of patients.
- Contains, isolates, and minimizes hazardous materials spills.
- Works closely with other emergency medical staff, police, and public safety and fire personnel from other agencies; responds to mutual aid situations as required.
- Performs fire safety inspections on a variety of businesses and multi-family residences, and participates in a variety of public awareness activities to promote good public relations and fire safety awareness.
- Assists in investigations of fire cause and origin.
- Performs and conducts all necessary training activities as assigned and in accordance with readiness and preparation for firefighting activities.
Minimum Qualifications
The position requires the equivalent completion of the 12th grade plus a valid California class C driver’s license, California Emergency Medical Technician Certificate, and California Firefighter 1 Certificate, or ability to obtain each of these prior to the date of appointment.
Pay -Part-time employees do not qualify for benefits, except for accruing sick leave
